THERMOWOOD DECKING APPLICATIONS
► For a good application, the surface on which the decking will be applied, should be very smooth. The water flow direction (pitch) should be calculated very well. This will provide the water accumulation below the decking. If the surface is not smooth, it will cause to noices and swelling of the material. If the floor is a concrete area where the deckings will be assembled on (if it’s a surface that will have moisture absorbing on the long term) it’s recommended that, water absorption should be prevented by using smear isolation.
► The surface where decking installation will be applied has to be dry. If the surface is not dry enough, the distance between the decking boards and the ground should be minimum 10 cm. It’s also required that the wood should be always exposed to the air circulation.
► The carcassing material which is used beneath the Decking also is recommended to be used from ThermoWood materials and installed paralel to the pitch. On the places where the underconstruction is going to be glued on a concrete place an undercoat has to be applied on both wood and ground. It’s recommended to use PU Glue for this application. If no isolation material is existing on the application area, it’s advised to use a screwing to fix it. The carcassings which is planned to be used have to be minimum 40mm in thickness and 40 mm in width. The distance between the underconstruction shouldn’t be more than 30 cm. It is also advised to use polyurethane glue by jointing the lengthwise of the deckings.
► If a long length decking is going to be used it’s recommended to have a head jointing system at the heads of the boards which is also provided by our company. Novawood jointing systems both minimizes faults during and after the assembling and are preventing the swelling of the deckings.
► We recommend stainless steel screws during the montage. There is no need to use front-drilling process for softwoods, contrary to, it’s necessary to use front-drilling process for hardwoods. Recommended screwing system is; C class screws which are called Hapatec and Terassotec. They are gathering the torsion power.
► Before the assembly it’s important to protect the decking colour against UV rays so that the colour doesn’t change with the effect of the sun lights. Therefore, all sides of the deckings should be covered with an oil or solvent based wood protective containing pigments (all materials can be provided by Novawood as one coat oil applied). The second coat should be applied on the visible sides after the installation on site.
► The distance between the decking boards have to be 5 mm min. Even if the deckings are assembled by screwing onto the carcassings from above, it recommended to glue the wood pieces with polyurethane glue to prevent the noices and bendings.
► For installations in which plastic filler is going to be used, the distance between the boards have to be minimum 5 mm in width, the deepness should be 7 mm and the gap has to be filled with mastic. (Sikaflex T6 or its equivalent)
► During decking tile assemblies with wooden underconstructions, the deckings have to be glued on the ground, just like it was mentioned above with normal long decks to prevent noices and bendings.
► It is vital to choose the right plastic base for decking tiles. It’s important to use a structure, which restrains the water accumulation on the plastic base and obtain the water flow.
► During the usage at exterior areas, it’s adviced to use stainless steel screws to reduce the risk of rotting and the unexpected colourization on the wood. If press air guns are planned to be used for the assembly then galvanized sheet screws can be used.
► Novawood recommends to use Jansen, Restol and Remmers Products for the need of stain or their equivolent. For glueing ; Sika T55, Thomsit, Kleiberit or their equivalent should be used.
